Asian Massage Styles Explained: Thai, Shiatsu and Acupressure

Asian massage is an umbrella term, not a single technique. The traditions underneath it developed separately across Thailand, Japan, China and Korea, and each one feels noticeably different on the table.

Thai massage: assisted stretching

Performed with rhythmic compression along energy lines plus guided, yoga-like stretches. Traditional Thai work uses little or no oil and is often done in loose clothing. Best for mobility, tight hips and anyone who sits at a desk all week.

Shiatsu: finger pressure along meridians

A Japanese tradition using thumb, palm and elbow pressure held at specific points rather than gliding strokes. It feels methodical and grounding, and suits people who find oil massage too slippery or too light.

Acupressure and reflexology

Acupressure applies sustained pressure to specific points to release tension patterns. Reflexology concentrates on the feet, where mapped zones correspond to the rest of the body — a favorite after a long day walking the Strip.

Which should you request?

A quick guide when you call:

  • • Stiff, limited range of motion → Thai
  • • Deep, held pressure without oil → shiatsu
  • • Tired feet and legs → reflexology
  • • Full-body relaxation with oil → Swedish-Asian blend
